Here's the Scoop: Alun Probert

Alun is the Group Head at The GovCom Group.

1. Why did you choose advertising/marketing as a career path?

It was all I ever wanted to do.

2. What's the best advice you'd give to your younger self who's just started their career?

Ask lots of questions. Read. Everything.

3. What do you look for when hiring young people?

Determination.

4. How do I make my resume stand out?

Whatever line of work you are applying for, show proof you’ve done it. If you want to be a writer, write something, if you want to work in Radio, volunteer at a local community station. Make the first move to show you are serious. Résumé’s are secondary.

5. What skills have been most beneficial for you?

A love of language. An open mind.

6. Do you need a degree?

It depends. Personally, I’d be far more impressed with a body of work already under someone’s belt, no matter how raw or unfinished.

7. What was a key lesson you learnt in your career to date?

It’s okay to make a mistake, especially when trying something new. It’s never okay to make the same mistake twice.

8. Have your reasons for joining the industry changed over time?

No.

9. Have you ever failed? How did you react?

Yes. For all the magazines I successfully launched, one or two didn’t make it. See answer above…you have to work out what went wrong and learn from it.

10. If you had the chance to re-do your career knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?

Made more demo tapes and written more stuff.
